MINNEAPOLIS, MN-June 6, 2001--Genmar Holdings, Inc. and American Suzuki Motor Corporation have jointly announced an agreement for the purchase of four-stroke Suzuki outboard motors by Genmar for a number of its boat companies.
"We have been impressed with Suzuki's innovative four-strokes and are eager to offer the benefits of Suzuki outboards to our customers," said Genmar Chairman Irwin Jacobs following a meeting today with Rick Suzuki, President of American Suzuki.
Under the agreement, the first OEM program for Suzuki Marine, the Brea, California-based outboard company will receive a significant order for Genmar's Aquasport, Crestliner, Logic, Lowe, Lund, Hydra-Sports and Wellcraft boat lines.
"We have been strengthening our four-stroke product line and building our brand," said Suzuki. "With this partnership, Genmar customers will be able to purchase the highest quality boat factory rigged with the highest quality outboard. We're in it for the long run so they can buy with confidence."
Suzuki offers four-stroke outboards from 9.9 to 140 horsepower, all of which consume 30 to 80 percent less fuel than comparable two-stroke outboards. The company has won two consecutive annual IMTEC Innovation Awards for its 60/70 and 40/50 models, as well as MOTORBOATING magazine's Editor's Choice Award in 2000 for the Suzuki 90 and 115 four-strokes.
Boats powered by Suzuki four-strokes will be introduced to dealers at Genmar boat builder meetings throughout the summer.
"As an independent boat manufacturing company, unencumbered by ownership affiliations with a single brand of power, we will continue to offer our customers the widest possible choice of quality engine brands," Jacobs added. "Our agreement with Suzuki strengthens this commitment and further enhances the position of our boat lines in the marketplace."
Genmar, the world's largest recreational boat manufacturer, builds 18 brands of fiberglass, aluminum and polyethylene boats at 14 manufacturing centers in the U.S. and Canada. The company is known for its leading-edge technology, which includes the exclusive VEC™ (Virtually Engineered Composite), and Roplene™ (roto-molded polyethylene) boat building processes. In addition to the boat lines scheduled for Suzuki outboard power, Genmar brands also include Carver, Glastron, Four Winns, Hatteras, Javelin, Larson, Nova, Ranger, Seaswirl, Stratos and Trojan.
